3 Great Things To Do In Manchester

Matt Crisp August 10, 2022

Manchester is one of the most vibrant cities in the UK, full of history yet always looking forwards. Its population is diverse and welcoming, and they take great pride in their characterful and inspiring city. There are many world class entertainment, cultural and sporting venues within and around the city, and you will never be short of a place to visit.

Here are just three things to see and do during your trip to Manchester.

The John Rylands Library

There are libraries, and then there is The John Rylands Research Institute and Library on Deansgate. The building is considered one of the finest examples of neo-gothic architecture in Europe, and it is majestic and awe-inspiring both inside and out.

The library houses many historically important documents, including a 1476 William Caxton edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. It is now part of Manchester University, and is an internationally renowned academic centre.

It was founded in the memory of the successful industrialist John Rylands, by his wife Enriqueta, who inherited his fortune upon his death in 1888. The building was designed by the architect Basil Champneys and opened to the public on 1 January 1900.

RHS Garden Bridgewater

The historic gardens at the Worsley New Hall Estate have been beautifully restored by the RHS, and are a wonderful way to while away an afternoon. There is also a new Learning Centre which is aimed at school children, and expert advice for all things horticultural is available at the RHS Gardening Advice Service.

The 156-acre site is in Salford, a short ten minute drive from the city centre. The historic house was demolished in the 1940s after falling into disrepair, but it was once one of the most prestigious houses in the region, with the largest Victorian walled garden in England, at 11 acres.

As well as the expertly landscaped and planted grounds, there are courses, workshops and other events held throughout the year, so keep an eye on the calendar. There are two cafes on the site, and a garden centre selling plants, homeware, and gifts.

Candlelight Oasis Tribute, 11 August 2022

There could be no blog about Manchester without a mention of the city’s most famous band, Oasis. A candlelit tribute at Manchester Cathedral might not be the first thing that springs to mind, but this is a city that is full of surprises!

The iconic Northern guitar pop band went on to sell out arenas and huge outdoor gigs during the 1990s, and their brash laddish image sometimes disguised the melodic and moving power of their best songs, such as Champagne Supernova and Wonderwall.

Now, Oasis lovers can experience their favourite band in a whole new dimension, as the familiar anthems are reinterpreted in the spiritual candlelit atmosphere of Manchester Cathedral, and played by a world-class band, accompanied by a violinist and pianist. An unmissable experience for music fans of all ages!
