9 Of The Best Places For Winter Sun

Matt Crisp November 14, 2019

Winter has really taken hold here in the UK now and temperatures have really plunged – so no doubt there are many keen jetsetters out there planning a holiday right now to enjoy a bit of winter sun. But where to go? Here are just a couple of the very best places to warm up a little at this time of year. Where will you travel to first?

Cuba

Flying from London, it should take you around 13 hours to reach Cuba, with the best times to go between October and April. You’re guaranteed to enjoy lots of sun during your stay and hardly any rain – a far cry from the weather we’ve got going on at the moment here in the UK!

If it’s a beach holiday you’re looking for, make your way to the south coast of the country, although you’ll likely find lots of other people in the region with the same idea as you. Havana is a must-visit as well if you want to be transported back to the 1950s and see as many classic cars as you can.

And then there’s Trinidad, which has some incredible architecture – perfect for all the culture vultures out there among you. And if you’re keen to get away from the beach and the tourists, going on a hike up a mountain is easily achieved here as well. Cuba really does have it all.

Belize

Anyone keen to escape the madness of the festive period might want to consider booking flights to Belize, with the best times to go between December and April. What a great way to spend Christmas this year!

The temperatures average 30 degrees C at this time of year so returning to the UK after your trip will certainly be quite the shock indeed. There’s an awful lot to discover in this tiny little nation, whether you’re looking for Mayan ruins, nature reserves, barrier reefs, junglee, national parks… it really does have it all.

Cyprus

If you’d rather not travel for hours and hours, looking at the destinations on your doorstep should be your first step towards finding that delightful winter sun… and Cyprus will always have a lot to offer any keen holidaymaker.

Cyprus is always busy during the summer but you can easily avoid the tourists in the off-season. There’s always a lot going on, whether you want to just laze around on the beach or visit some historical sites, beautiful villages, lots of cultural activities and amazing food to be discovered in local restaurants.

The weather can be quite changeable, however, so make sure you pack accordingly and take a raincoat with you just in case the heavens do decide to open.

Tel Aviv

It’s sunny for most of the year in Israel, so the perfect choice for a bit of winter sun – and it’s not all that far away, taking about five hours to fly to if you go from London.

You might not find it as hot as other destinations at this time of year, but you’ll still find it warm enough to laze around on the beach – and since you can easily make the trip over the course of a long weekend, the region makes for a brilliant getaway idea before the festive season really kicks off.

Abu Dhabi

At this time of year, the searing heat of Abu Dhabi falls to around 25 degrees C, so there’s no better time than winter to pop off for a little jaunt to the Middle East. While many extol the joys of visiting Dubai, Abu Dhabi has just as much to offer, if not more, with all sorts of incredible architecture to behold, as well as lots of history and heritage to discover.

Make sure you go and see the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as well as the Emirates Palace Hotel, but also really steep yourself in the local culture by visiting the Mina Zayed Fish Zouk, where you can watch fisherman haggle over their daily catch and take all sorts of delicious produce away with you.

Cape Verde

A short six-hour flight will take you from the UK to Cape Verde, home to some incredible scenery, delightfully warm weather, jungle, volcanoes and sandy white beaches that you can call your own for a week or two.

The desert island of Sal is always a popular choice for holidaymakers so perhaps put this at the top of your must-visit list, although if you want to escape the tourists as much as you can, you might find that your needs are better catered for with Boa Visa instead.

If you’re a big fan of diving, however, Sal is an absolute must for you, with lots of whale sharks, tropical marine life and lava caves to keep you interested.

Florida

You might not have considered a winter sun trip to the US but if you are mulling it over, Florida would be a great choice. It’s really lovely and warm at this time of year, with temperatures rarely falling below 20 degrees C and the sea staying warm as well, so you know you’ll be able to splash about without much fuss and bother at all.

It’s the perfect choice for a family getaway, with the likes of Disneyworld and Universal Studios Orlando on the doorstep – and don’t forget to explore the Everglades thoroughly before you go home as well.

Cancun

Those of you who want nothing more than to party the night away will feel right at home in Cancun in Mexico, a place that really comes alive once the sun goes down. Some of the best nightclubs going can be found here and you’ll have a wonderful time dancing and laughing on the sandy beaches with friends and family.

Of course, it’s not just about nightlife and there are some incredible beaches to laze the days away on in the region. Many of the beachfront hotels have their own private beaches so choose your accommodation wisely. Turtle Beach is perhaps the most popular location for locals and families, so perhaps make this a priority if you are away with the kids this year.

Costa Rica

If you’ve run out of time for holidays in 2019 but want to get away as soon as you can, a trip to Costa Rica in February could be a great idea. The temperatures are around 28 degrees C at that time of year, so you’ll be able to think nice warm thoughts as everyone back at home in the UK is freezing their socks off.

There’s some incredible wildlife and scenery to be discovered here, with a lot of the land dedicated to conservation… so perfect for any eco-warriors out there as well.
