Tunisia Judged Safe As Tourist Destination Once Again

The government has just announced that it is no longer advising against travel to the majority of the country, including Tunis and other major tourist destinations. Since 2015, after the terrorist attacks in Sousse and the Bardo National Museum that saw 31 Britons killed, the Foreign office has been advising against travel to most of the country – but this has now changed.

Alistair Burt, minister for the Middle East and North Africa, said: “This update reflects our latest assessment that the risk to British nationals in Tunisia has changed. This is in part due to the security improvements that the Tunisian authorities and tourist industry have made since the tragic terrorist attacks in 2015, with support from the UK and international partners.

“Whilst we are changing advice against all but essential travel in most of Tunisia, there remain real risks for British nationals and I recommend people read our travel advice before planning their travel.”

The Foreign Office is still advising against all travel to the Chaambi Mountains National Park and the town of Ben Guerdane, as well as all but essential travel to towns like Douz, Nefta, Zarzis and Médenine.

If you do decide to head to Tunisia this year, you’ll be pleased to hear that there is an awful lot you can see and do in the country. The old town is a must-see, with its stunning architecture and winding alleyways… be prepared to get lost but have a great time finding yourself again! Make sure you visit the local souks and see the palaces on Sidi Brahim.

You should also make time to visit the Bardo Museum, which is home to one of the most famous mosaic collections in the entire world. And, as with any city break, you’ll probably want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town for a bit of a breather – so make your way to Parc du Belvedere. If you’ve got the energy, climb your way to the top of the hill for some of the very best views of the medina – or just sit beneath the palm and fig trees with your holiday book.

As for organised activities, you’re certainly not spoiled for choice here. You can book yourself on a hot air balloon ride, or sign up for a jaunt on the back of a camel. If you’d rather take a dip in the azure seas, head off to Hammamet, which is home to deep-sea caves, old shipwrecks and stunning coral reefs.

And, of course, let’s not forget the film buffs out there! If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’ve got to go to Matmata and check out the caves there – which you’ll probably recognise as part of the set for Tattooine in A New Hope!
