Searches For 2022 Staycations Soar Amid Omicron Emergence

Matt Crisp December 22, 2021

With the emergence of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, people are again looking for staycation options in the UK for 2022, with foreign holidays looking uncertain as travel restrictions are reintroduced.

Wales Online reports that holiday park operator Parkdean Resorts has predicted the most in-demand staycation hotspots for 2022, and looked into how the pandemic has affected the travel and tourism industry.

In 2020, the most popular destinations for staycations were Devon and Cornwall, but according to Parkdeans Staycation Report, the popular South West counties have been overtaken by northern destinations such as Lancashire and Yorkshire.

The holiday park firm analysed internal search data for 2022 holidays to predict where the most in-demand destinations will be next summer and predicted that July 2022 will be the busiest month of the year for staycations, claiming 23 per cent of all holiday searches.

Lets have a look at the list of UK staycation hotspots for 2022.

Cornwall

While the South East county is not as popular as in previous years, it remains in the top spot for the most in-demand location for 2022. Cornwall has incredibly scenic beaches and boasts a range of activities from surfing to amusement arcades, meaning it is little surprise that it has retained its crown for another year.

Lancashire

Hot on the heels of Cornwall is Lancashire in the North West, which has experienced a 60 per cent increase in online searches for staycations in 2022. The country promises breathtaking views and long sandy beaches to enjoy, and is sure to be a popular staycation destination for summer 2022.

Lake District

North of Lancashire is Cumbria, and the Lake District, which also saw a 60 per cent increase in searches, landing it in third place. The Lake District National Park has activities for families of all ages and sizes to enjoy throughout the summer, and some excellent accommodation from camping to clamping, B&Bs to boutique hotels.

Yorkshire

Heading east, Yorkshire found fourth place in Parkdeans list, with a 57 per cent increase in searches. It is home to stunning national parks such as the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and is a great place to explore in the sunnier months.

Wales

With an increase of 51 per cent in searches online, Wales can provide holidaymakers with vast, stunning landscapes, beaches, and a wide range of activities for families.

Parkdeans research not only looked at where UK staycationers wanted to visit, but it also looked at the more specialised venues that have gained popularity.

Searches for glamping pods experienced an impressive 83 per cent increase, while domes found a 49 per cent increase in online interest. Searches for shepherd huts also surged by 50 per cent and cabins experienced a 22 per cent increase.
