Magical Castles To Visit For A Memorable Time This Christmas

Matt Crisp November 21, 2024

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and there are many gifts to buy, but sometimes you just need to step away from the usual merry-go-round of Christmas markets and shopping malls. If you are craving something a little different but still want that festive feeling, the answer may be waiting for you in one of the UK’s enchanting castles.

These historical sites are particularly magical in winter and are ideal for group visits and coach hire parties. Here are some of the best castles to visit in the UK this year.

Edinburgh Castle

Set in the heart of Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh Castle is one of the oldest fortified structures in Europe. It has a long and exciting history of kings and queens, soldiers and prisoners, sieges and battles. It’s still got a military presence, but the castle is now largely a tourist attraction. In fact, it’s so popular that it’s necessary to book tickets in advance.

The castle is situated in an elevated position so you’ll have fine views over the city. You can plan your own itinerary, book an audio tour, or be shown round by one of the knowledgeable guides. Highlights include the Great Hall, St Margaret’s Chapel, the Royal Palace, and an immersive exhibition that tells the story of the castle during the Wars of Independence.

During December and early January, the Castle of Light returns for its fifth year. When darkness falls, the whole site is lit with immersive displays and interactive installations, and there’s music, street food vendors, projection shows and historical reenactments. Tickets must be purchased online in advance, and times are 4.30pm to 9pm, last entry 7.30 to 7.45.

Warwick Castle, Warwickshire

Warwick Castle is one of the UK’s oldest and largest castles, and it goes all out to well and truly embrace the Christmas spirit. There’s stories with Santa and his helpers for the little ones, with gifts and mince pies. This year, the ice rink makes its debut, set against the backdrop of the famous Guy’s Tower.

Follow the light trail across the 64 acre grounds, which are brilliantly illuminated by over half a million twinkling Christmas lights. Afterwards, replenish your energy in the food and drink village, where you can enjoy classic seasonal treats including mulled wine, marshmallows, and roast chestnuts.

New attractions this year include the Snow Queen on Horseback roaming around the castle grounds, a traditional family pantomime, and Princess Tower Storytime. Be sure to book early online as tickets are selling out fast!

Windsor Castle, Berkshire

Windsor Castle is one the oldest and largest inhabited castles in the world; of course being the official residence of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Throughout the festive season, the State Apartments are decorated with stunning Christmas displays, including a 20 foot high Nordmann Fir tree in St George’s Hall.

Queen Mary’s Doll House, a 1:12 replica of an Edwardian residence gifted to Queen Mary, will be fitted out with charming bespoke miniature scale decorations to mark the centenary. There’s also a series of festive events to entertain children, including crafts and workshops. The cafe serves a special Christmas menu, and the gift shop has a lovely selection of items.

 Leeds Castle, Kent

Leeds Castle, (which is Kent rather than Yorkshire) has plenty to offer at this time of year. There’s a stunning award-winning light display that illuminates the entire grounds, the castle and the skies above. There’s also street food vendors offering tempting treats, such as spiced winter warmers, hot chocolate, and toasted marshmallows.

The castle itself is brimming with history, and there’s much to explore with beautifully presented exhibitions and displays.
