4 Pancake Day Events In London

Matt Crisp February 15, 2017

Pancake Day is fast approaching (February 28th, in case you’ve forgotten) and if you’ve arranged coach hire to London to coincide with this date, then you’re in luck! There are some really fun events going on to celebrate Shrove Tuesday… so perhaps don’t stay in and make your own pancakes, head outside to see what’s taking place. Here are some of our top picks for Pancake Day events in London.

The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race

This is an annual charity race through the streets of Spitalfields to raise funds for the London Air Ambulance and it really is a lot of fun. Teams of four people get dressed up in fancy dress and run through the streets with their pancakes in a bid to win a special engraved frying pan for themselves. Register in advance or you can enter on the day and you’ll be rewarded with your very own hot pancakes!

The Three-Legged Pancake Race

Head to the Flat Iron Square Bar for this really fun homage to the pancake. You have to bring your own pan but there are prizes up for grabs for people who can toss the fastest pancake as well as the highest one… so start practising now!

My Old Dutch

If you’re not up for a pancake race or two, why don’t you and your party head off to one of the many creperies to be found in London town. You’re definitely spoiled for choice and many establishments have pancakes on the menu, but since it’s Shrove Tuesday you’d be wise to head somewhere that specialises in this delicacy and not much else. My Old Dutch in Holborn is a great choice, although it’s always popular on Pancake Day so reserve a table and get there early or you could be disappointed. Sweet and savoury pancakes are on the menu so all tastes are catered for. Yummy!

The Parliamentary Pancake Race

This is a must-see if you love seeing politicians, members of the press and other high-flying Londoners kick back, relax and spend an hour or so flipping pancakes. This fundraiser is organised each year by Rehab, a charity that helps people with both mental and physical disabilities. Participants have to flip their pancakes continuously as they make their way around the course, so you can bet it’s going to be an entertaining one. Make your way to Victoria Tower Gardens outside the Houses of Parliament on the 28th.

Of course, there are plenty of other fine establishments in London putting pancakes on the menu to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, but these are just a few of our favourite picks. We’d love to hear what you get up to on the day so give us a shout after the fact to let us know how you all got on. If you took part in a race, share some photos with us and we’ll put them on the blog!
