Matt Crisp June 6, 2023

We are approaching the peak of summer already, and it is the perfect time to enjoy Britain at its blooming best. Here are some suggestions for the beautiful public gardens to visit this summer, as well as some flower shows that are back to their blossoming best this year!

BBC Gardeners’ World Live, 15-18 June, NEC Birmingham

The long running TV show is holding its annual event in the heart of the country in June, and it will be packed with inspirational ideas for your home garden as well as the chance to pick up tips and tricks from the experts. View a collection of imaginative display gardens, listen to special talks, and visit one of the largest floral marquees in the country.

Tickets also include entry to the BBC Good Food Show, where you can watch the professionals cooking up a storm. There will also be the chance to sample produce and even pack your own perfect picnic. Guided walks and talks led by leading horticulture experts and designers are available as well.

Blenheim Palace Flower Show, 23-25 June, Oxfordshire

The 10th annual Blenheim Palace Flower Show takes place at the end of June, and includes ideas and inspiration for all types of gardens and gardeners. As well as the Grand Floral Pavilion, there will also be a chance to visit the Shopping Village and attend talks and live entertainment.

Highgrove Gardens, Gloucestershire, throughout August and September

The private residence of His Majesty King Charles III features some of the most beautifully cultivated and well maintained gardens in the country. The gardens will be open to the public for guided tours on various dates throughout August and September. Visit award-winning flower gardens and orchards, and top up on organic produce in the shop.

Bear in mind that some of the pathways are rough and uneven so they may not be suitable for prams and wheelchairs. For security reasons, visitors will also need to bring a form of photo identification such as a passport or driving licence. The nearby market town of Tetbury is also well worth visiting for its heritage and shopping opportunities.

Shrewsbury Flower Show, 11 & 12 August

Shrewsbury Flower Show is a large event that still retains an appealing country town atmosphere. There is a floral marquee and much more to enjoy besides, including lectures from leading voices in the field, and a food hall where you are able to sample fresh local produce.

Besides all this there is a live entertainment arena featuring the likes of Liberty X, Beatlemania, and Go West. There is also a bandstand, fireworks, and a children’s entertainment area with a special circus skills academy, bubbles, and a penny farthing biplane.

As if all that is not enough, there is showjumping held in a natural riverside arena, featuring everyone from pony club teams and top international riders. All in all, it is an ideal day out with something to offer for all the family.
