Four Stunning UK Staycation Ideas

Matt Crisp September 7, 2020

Heading abroad for sandy beaches, sun, and sangria might be off the cards for this year, especially with the quickly changing quarantine rules, but we’ve all been reminded that there are so many incredible places to visit and see right here in the British Isles.

Whether you want a simple day trip to an amusement park with the family, or tick off visits to the UK’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or even try something different with a holiday in a treehouse, there’s something for everyone right here.

We have a look at five of the best places to visit in the UK

Cornwall

Cornwall has long been a British favourite, the original staycation destination, and it has built a reputation as a thriving tourist hotspot over the years. You might want to explore the miles of stunning beaches with a surfboard, or experience the unique seaside charm, or just enjoy traditional Cornish pasties and cream teas.

Penzance is popular for its incredible views and verdant landscapes, and of course Land’s End. Watersports fanatics will love the surfer-dude vibe of Newquay. And botanists should visit the Eden Project or The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

The Peak District

The rambling trails, winding rivers, and stunning views of the Peak District National Park make it ideal for the outdoorsy types. It’s an amazing place to hike, cycle, and camp, and can feel like you’re a million miles away from the hustle of the cities.

The kids will love Go Ape and its obstacles courses. The cable cars at the Heights of Abraham will provide sweeping views across the district, and gorgeous Chatsworth House, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, or Bolsover Castle can thrill the history buffs.

The Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands are known for their breath-taking views, with a landscape filled with both natural beauty and fascinating wildlife. Scotland is a land with a rich culture and history and makes a fantastic and ever-popular holiday destination. From its beautiful national parks to thriving towns and villages, the Scottish Highlands for a staycation won’t disappoint.

Take a city break in Inverness for the best of both worlds, great shopping, and its own castle. The Knoydart Peninsula offers a wealth of wildlife, including herons, deer and seals, and the Northwest Highlands Geopark offers views you’ll never forget.

The Lake District

The Lake District is England’s largest national park and is often argued to be one of the most beautiful. Located in Northwest England and within easy reach of luxury minibus hire in Manchester, it’s a great choice for those not wanting to splash out on overseas flights.

The Lake District has some great things to see and do, and of course, some of the best views in the UK. Romantic poet William Wordsworth’s house is a popular tourist attraction here, as is Beatrix Potter’s house. For something a little less literary and a little more action-packed, walking, cycling, windsurfing and kayaking are always popular here.
