Staycation Day Trips in the UK: Coach Hire Holidays Are Back!

Matt Crisp June 22, 2021

After last year’s summer holiday season being effectively cancelled, we know the nation might have been dreaming of summer holidays 2021 in far-off exotic locations, but it doesn’t look like we’re out of the red (or amber) yet…

But that’s no bad thing, because while it’s sometimes easy to overlook the places close to home, millions of Brits are now starting to soak up the sights of our beautiful British Isles and rediscovering the joy of coach hire holidays with ‘staycations’ on English soil.

And there’s no shortage of places to go and things to do. But you need to be a bit holiday-savvy, because some reports are warning that the travel ban is pushing up prices of UK holidays, and hotels and private accommodation are getting booked up.

A spokesperson for the Telegraph said: “People need to act fast. Pretty much the only way to find a cottage for this summer is to keep an eye on our, and our competitor’s, social media for new properties coming on.”

So it’s time to get planning for some UK summer fun in the sun. And luckily for us, holidaycottages.co.uk has compared over 400 beaches across England, Scotland and Wales (evaluating them on various factors, like parking, toilets, lifeguards, cafes, accessibility, water sports, and whether the beach is dog-friendly) and whittled down the best beaches in the UK.

Saltburn Beach

The winner? Saltburn Beach in Yorkshire! Popular with both families and surfers, this sandy shore took the top spot, followed by Cornwall’s Fistral Beach and Norfolk’s Hemsby Beach, taking second and third place respectively.

It’s not the first time that Saltburn has been a hit, and it has previously been hailed as one of the best blue flag beaches in North England. The water is swim-friendly and there are lifeguards during peak seasons, which is great news for parents who have children wanting to play in the sea, and on windier days the beach is a big hit with both amateur and pro-surfers.

And there’s plenty for families to explore in the area, too, including the Cliff Tramway to a miniature railway, which makes for a great day out for the kids, even if it’s just a weekend day trip.

Fistral Beach

The silver medal went to Fistral Beach in Cornwall. It’s long been a firm favourite with holidaymakers because of it’s gorgeous stretch of golden sand and rugged coastline views (there are also lifeguards in peak seasons for those of you who like to get in the water).

Hemsby Beach

The bronze medal went to Hemsby Beach in Norfolk—another stretch of sandy shores that attract families during the summer holidays, thanks to the easy-to-access location and handy facilities.

But many more deserve a mention. Up against 400 beaches, these came out as Top 10 best beaches in the UK:

  1. Saltburn Beach, Yorkshire
  2. Fistral Beach, Cornwall
  3. Hemsby Beach, Norfolk
  4. Tankerton Beach, Kent
  5. Dovercourt Bay, Essex
  6. Camber Sands Beach, East Sussex
  7. Alum Chine Beach, Dorset
  8. Perranporth Beach, Cornwall
  9. Tresaith Beach, Ceredigion
  10. Saundersfoot Beach, Pembrokeshire
