Take Care When Driving Abroad This Summer

Matt Crisp July 11, 2017

If you’re planning a big holiday overseas this summer and have already sorted out luxury minibus hire to take you all to the airport and back, just make sure you’re as prepared for driving hire cars while abroad.

New research from Admiral has just revealed that August is the month where more accidents happen on roads overseas, with nearly a quarter of car insurance claims from 2016 made in just a single month.

The study did only look into drivers taking their own cars on holiday with them but you should still be as careful in a hire car as you would if it were your own vehicle.

The top ten destinations for car accident claims made in 2016 were found to be France, Spain, Germany, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Romania and Switzerland.

“Driving abroad is a great way to have the freedom to explore new places, without to cost of flights. There’s no reason it shouldn’t be a really enjoyable experience, but just as accidents can happen at home, they can happen abroad too, and different laws and languages can cause additional stress,” head of claims Lorna Connelly said.

When hiring a car, don’t leave it to the last minute or you won’t know if you’re getting the best deal or not. When you do get your car, check it over carefully and make sure that any damage you spot is noted on the rental agreement. Check the local rules of the road of the country you’re in as well and always keep an eye out for hidden costs like VAT.
