Three Fantastic UK-Based Travel Experiences

Matt Crisp February 12, 2021

After almost a year of lockdown restrictions to help battle the spread of the coronavirus, there can’t be anyone who isn’t daydreaming of jetting off to sunny climes to enjoy a beach holiday.

But government ministers have warned that foreign holidays may well be off the cards for the foreseeable future. Cabinet Minister Liz Truss has said that the current rules for quarantine and the requirement for negative COVID tests may well be ‘quite permanent’.

However, this doesn’t mean that we can’t plan an outdoorsy trip to blow the cobwebs away once national restrictions have been lifted, as long as we all keep socially distanced, of course!

Whether you and your family fancy a walk along dramatic shorelines, discovering hidden treasure, or simply escaping the rat race to a peaceful country retreat, we have rounded up three activities you can take part in that are a little closer to home.

Stay in a Shepherd’s Hut

Stylish Devonshire country house hotel, Lympstone Manor, has recently introduced five new luxurious Shepherd’s Huts for when they able to reopen and offer stays again.

The hotel is south from Exeter, and has views over the estuary of the River Exe, and isn’t far from Torquay, Newton Abbot, and the gorgeous Devon countryside.

The huts are located in the trees at the foot of the hotel’s vineyard and come complete with outdoor hot tubs, roll-top baths, and walk-in showers. Sporty types will also enjoy free access to the hotel’s new tennis courts.

The huts have been named after the local wildlife that can be found on the grounds of there manor, Hedgehog Row, Bee Hive, Hare’s Rest, Otter Holt and Fox Den, and prices start at £409 per night.

Discover hidden treasure

Treasure Trails’ themed self-guided walking trail booklets take explorers on a circular outdoor route of around two miles somewhere in your local area. They’ve been developed with social distancing in mind, and are perfect for exploring and getting to know your immediate local area while having an adventure for the whole family.

Gather your explorers, and work together to track down clues and solve a detective mystery or even a secret spy mission, with some fabulous prizes up for grabs.

Explore the coast

The newly launched England’s Coast project has gathered all the info you will need on what’s going on along our glorious shorelines.

For 2021, the highlights include the world’s first art geo-tour trail, which uses geocaching, where participants use a Global Positioning System receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called ‘geocaches’ or ‘caches’.

The trail has seven artworks connecting the coastlines of Essex, Kent and East Sussex; the 200th anniversary of the death of poet John Keats, who had links to Margate; and the Isle of Wight’s designation as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
