Top 5 Destinations To Celebrate New Year’s Eve in the UK

Matt Crisp December 10, 2022

The UK has some of the best choices in the world when it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve. From historical customs to themed club nights, there’s something to suit all tastes. With ongoing industrial action affecting rail travel over the holiday period, why not book a luxury minibus hire and visit one of these amazing places!

It would be impossible not to begin with the Scottish capital, which is world famous for its Hogmanay celebrations. Hogmanay celebrations date back to pagan times, possibly originating from the Viking invasions of the 8th century. For centuries, it was a far bigger event than Christmas in Scotland.

Today, many of the old traditions continue, such as the spectacular fire ceremonies. This year there are three days’ worth of events running in the capital from 30 December to 1 January 2023. The Concert in the Gardens takes place on Saturday 31 with the Pet Shop Boys as headliners plus special guests.

The world-famous New Year’s Eve Street Party will also be taking place against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Enjoy street food stalls, DJ sets, funfair rides, giant screens, and of course an unforgettable firework display.

Cardiff always celebrates the New Year in style, with family friendly events such as outdoor skating and firework displays. The Winter Wonderland event in the city centre also boasts a fun fair, live music, and food stalls. The Welsh have their own word for New Year, ‘Calenigg’, which literally translates as ‘first day of the month.’

It’s impossible to ignore London as a New Year’s Eve destination! There are celebrations happening all across the capital, with the huge South Bank firework display drawing the crowds who line the banks of the Thames. You can even book a river cruise to view the display in unique style.

Besides this, there’s no end of clubs, parties, concerts and shows to choose from. If that isn’t enough for you, there’s always the opportunity to hit the January sales at London’s top shopping destinations. There’s also the New Year’s Day Proms at the Barbican Centre, and the famous New Year’s Day Parade featuring over 10,000 dancers, acrobats, and musicians.

Manchester is a city that knows how to party, and New Year’s Eve is no exception! The coolest tickets in town include Matt & Phreds All-Out Disco Party on Saturday 31 December, featuring Dreamer plus the best funk, soul, and disco vibes throughout the night. Also check out the Ritz and the Warehouse Project if you are a music fan.

For those who prefer the cosier feel of towns and villages, Cornwall is a fabulous destination for New Year. Choose from fun family beach parties in St Ives, or fashionable Newquay for fancy dress, cider, and hearty renditions of Auld Lang Syne at midnight.

Looe is another popular Cornish NYE destination, where you can enjoy delicious seafood and party on the beach. Dressing up is obligatory to feel part of the crowd as you watch the fireworks!
