An article for the Express recently offered some advice on how you can slim down the cost of your staycation if you are on a tight budget.

Hannah Rouch, from Gumtree, told the news provider that the online marketplace has seen a surge in interest in camping gear and other items like caravans and even campervans.

She said that this “shows people are looking to save by going second-hand for their staycation essentials, proving that you don’t have to break the bank to have a great getaway this year”.

Ms Rouch also shared some advice on how you can reduce the cost of a staycation if you have yet to go away this year.

The first way to cut the cost of a getaway is to look for camping or caravanning breaks rather than staying in hotels. Although you can hire campervans, if you think this is the kind of holiday you’ll take multiple times a year it’s worth splashing out and buying your own van.

Although you have to be mindful of operating costs, typically having your own van will not only give you plenty of freedom about where you go and when, but it will also be cheaper than staying in a hotel.

If, however, you don’t drive but you still want the outdoor experience then camping is a brilliant alternative and one that’s even cheaper. You can pick up second-hand camping equipment and book a pitch at one of the many campsites around the UK.

Understandably, you might not want to take a long journey on public transport at the moment, and if you don’t drive you might be unsure of how best to make your way to your destination. If there is a group of you heading off to go camping, organising minibus hire could be the way to go to enable you to travel to and from your destination in comfort.

Another top tip from Ms Rouch is to look for community websites or groups on social media for the destination you’ll be visiting. This is the best way to find out about hidden gems that you could explore in the area, or to learn where the top spots for eating out are.

You could even learn about attractions that are a little off the beaten tourist trail, some of which may well be free.
