Could There Be An Air Bridge Between Britain & Portugal?

Matt Crisp May 25, 2020

The dreams of an overseas holiday in 2020 may not have died entirely, it would seem, with Britain and Portugal currently in talks to create an air bridge that would allow people to travel between countries without having to quarantine after their return journey.

According to the Times, a restriction-free travel deal could be on the cards with Portugal before any other country once quarantine measures are relaxed. Passengers will need to wear facemasks in the airport and while onboard the plane, while other measures include asking to use the bathroom to prevent queues.

Quarantine measures are set to be introduced from June 8th, with arrivals into the UK forced to self-isolate for 14 days.

Non-compliance could potentially result in a £1,000 fine. This is likely to deter the majority of people from travelling abroad, but the government has confirmed that it is now looking into establishing air bridges to allow travel to and from places with low coronavirus rates while avoiding quarantine.

Ryanair has already confirmed that it would run 1,000 flights a day from the beginning of July, focusing on holiday destinations like Cyprus, Italy, Greece, Portugal and Spain.

If you are considering a trip abroad and quite like the sound of Portugal, you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s a wonderful place to go on holiday.

For a breath of fresh air, make your way to Lagoa do Fogo (or Lake of Fire!), a lake within the volcanic complex of Agua de Pau Massif. As day trips go, you could certainly do an awful lot worse! You can see it by car but there’s also a circular walk if you’re feeling energetic.

If it’s a city break you’re after, Lisbon is definitely worth a visit, a truly stunning city that blends traditional heritage perfectly with modernism. It’s regularly recognised as one of the greatest cities in the world, in fact, and there’s truly something for everyone.

The best time of year to visit, weather-wise, is between May and June, although the pandemic has put paid to that… but don’t despair – the weather can still be delightful right through until September.

Don’t forget that there are lots of beaches really nearby, as well, so you can easily get out of the city for some fresh air… which means you don’t have to drive all the way to the Algarve for some sand between your toes.

But speaking of the Algarve, you’ll love it here as well, with the region home to some absolutely stunning beaches, quaint little fishing towns and villages, and beautiful weather.

What’s great about this part of Portugal is that you can tailor your holiday to suit yourself perfectly, whether you want to explore historic towns, have a night out on the tiles, sun yourself on the beach or go wild in theme parks. Whatever you do, you’ll have a wonderful time!
