What About A Foraging Holiday This Year?

Matt Crisp September 8, 2020

We’re having to think outside the box a little this year when it comes to travel and holidays and, although the world has started opening up once again, there are sure to be many of you out there who don’t yet feel comfortable with the thought of going overseas.

The good news for those of you who do feel this way is that there are all sorts of unique and interesting holiday ideas you could consider, right here in the UK. What about doing something a little on the educational side, for example, such as a foraging holiday?

There are countless options out there for this kind of staycation and it could be just the tonic to 2020 that you’ve been looking for, getting you out and about in the fresh air, learning all sorts of valuable skills that could prove particularly useful in the future.

Check out the website for Wild Food UK, which hosts a range of different foraging courses throughout the year and which have just restarted following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

They cover all corners of the country, so no matter where you are you’re sure to find a course relatively close to you – and some of the courses are dog-friendly, which is great news for pet owners everywhere.

If you’re very keen to get some fresh sea air, then check out what Taste the Wild has to offer – one and two-day courses that will take you around the coast of North Yorkshire or exploring the beautiful Cumbrian shores. You’ll learn how to find shellfish, seaweed and other edible plants and you could even combine this with a cooking course at the same time to really up your skill set.

Or for something truly decadent, you could even do a spot of truffle hunting with The English Truffle Company. These take place in Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire – or you could even bring your dog along and go on a truffle dog training workshop, if you’re keen to make your pampered pooch really earn their keep in future.

The day course comprises an introductory on truffles, some lunch, two hours of truffle hunting and then afternoon tea, with samplings of a delicious truffle dish. What could be better?

But if you’re keen to learn as much as you possibly can while on holiday, then Fat Hen is the wild cookery school for you. Their gourmet wild food weekend, for example, includes foraging, bread making, game butchery, fish filleting, pasta making and a whole lot more, so you certainly won’t have time to be bored while traversing the West Cornwall countryside in 2021.
